How I Found Reiki, or How Reiki Found Me
Before I start going into the more finer points of reiki, I thought I’ll talk about how I arrived at this energy healing method in the first place.
One thing that surprises most students of reiki, unless you’re Japanese like me, is that it is not very well known in Japan. I personally had never heard of it until I had lived in the U.S. for over a decade. And then, I was very skeptical. If this is Japanese, why doesn’t anyone in Japan talk about it? (I’ll have to do a separate post for this one.) I found it too strange and resisted learning about it for years.
But here’s another interesting thing about reiki. If reiki is meant to be a part of your life, it will find its way to you even when you resist. For me, it began with an interest in Tai Chi. As I learned more, the word “reiki” began popping up in the periphery. Eventually, I relented and googled it. I still wasn’t too sure about reiki then. Frankly, it scared me. I didn’t feel ready to stray from the beaten path and explore the unknown.
Listen to Your Instincts
Eventually, though, I listened to the insistent inner voice and bought a book about reiki. While I was in the middle of reading the book, I suddenly got the urge to Google this pilates studio in my neighborhood. It was just a casual thought. My son’s bus stop at the time was right in front of the building, and I got curious.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that the pilates instructor was also a reiki master! I had lived two blocks away from this studio for over a decade. The universe placed me in exactly the right spot and was waiting patiently for me to be ready! I knew in my gut then that I was meant to go see her. It’s been about 2 years since then, and she is the one who did both of my attunement so far.
I am a Japanese native who learned reiki from a blonde pilates instructor in New York, who in turn, learned it from Catholic nuns. It sounds like the strangest thing, but it just shows that reiki will find its way. Chances are, if you’re reading this post, reiki is probably meant to be a part of your life. And you’ve either already had or will have a similar experience. I’ve heard of so many people who wasn’t impressed by reiki at first, but eventually felt drawn enough to receive an attunement.
Reiki seems to know when you are ready to learn, so trust it when things begin lining up around you! It wouldn’t be showing up at your door if you’re not ready to dive in.
